Have you ever thought about what makes a good tape measure?

Have you ever thought about what makes a good tape measure?

Most people probably have not, including me. That changed when I was asked to design Crescent’s next-generation tape measure lineup. For construction professionals, it is one of the most relied-on tools on the job. In a market crowded with features and performance claims, what actually makes one good?

Product management prioritized slimness. Engineering prioritized durability. Both perspectives had merit, but before accepting either assumption, I wanted to learn from the people who used the tool the most.

A three-tier Crescent tape measure lineup built around a shared understanding of how professionals use and rely on the tool.

ControlTouch, Workhorse, and Shockforce serve different levels of performance and durability, but all three came from the same rigorous user research and competitive analysis.

That research defined four shared design criteria - ergonomics, usability, durability, and readability - which guided the full lineup. I then adjusted how far each criterion was pushed to give each tier a distinct role while keeping the products connected as one family.

ControlTouch, Workhorse, and Shockforce serve different levels of performance and durability, but all three came from the same rigorous user research and competitive analysis.

Since launching in Q2 2025, the lineup has sold at twice the rate of comparable tape measures at Lowe’s.

The commercial result validated the strategy behind the lineup: distinct product tiers, a shared ergonomic benchmark, and design intent carried consistently into production.

The ergonomic benchmarks I built continued to guide Crescent’s tape measure development beyond this lineup. The project also strengthened the Industrial Design team’s credibility across the company, leading other teams to involve me in later ergonomics-driven projects.

As Industrial Design Lead and the sole industrial designer on the project, I led the full lineup from early user research through pre-production. I partnered with product management and engineering to define the design direction, establish the ergonomic benchmark, and carry the work into manufacturing.

Crescent needed a Good / Better / Best family that could serve different price points without weakening user value or brand consistency. I separated the challenge into two decisions: what every Crescent tape needed to do well, and what each tier needed to own.

I compared median hand and finger dimensions against leading 25-foot tape profiles to understand where existing products aligned or failed to align with the hand. From that analysis, I established target dimensions for case width, height, curvature, and control reach.

Working with Engineering, I overlaid the hand-fit criteria with drum diameter, spring volume, wall thickness, fasteners, structure, and assembly requirements. This defined a viable design envelope before detailed form development began.

I combined grip-contact mapping with Engineering’s failure data to identify where overmold was necessary for grip, drop protection, and repeated handling. This replaced subjective debates about material coverage with evidence-based placement.

The resulting benchmark aligned Design, Engineering, and Product Management around a shared model for form, controls, and material placement. It later became a reference for future tape-measure development.

I remained involved through engineering integration, supplier DFM, and alpha, beta, and pilot builds. The goal was not to preserve every surface exactly as designed. It was to protect the case geometry, control relationships, and tier-specific features that created user value.
