Crescent's tape measures were one of Apex Tool Group's most profitable and recognized lines. The original Shockforce had helped build that reputation since its 2019 launch. So the brief carried real weight: improve something professionals already trusted, across three price tiers, in a category run by legacy brands.

Crescent needed a Good / Better / Best family that could serve different price points without diluting user value or brand coherence. I synthesized user and market evidence into shared design criteria, then partnered with Product Management to define a distinct role for each tier.

The ergonomic benchmark had to work around the product's internal architecture. The goal was to create the best possible interaction within real engineering constraints, not force the internal system into a predetermined ergonomic shape.

Working with Engineering, I combined the ergonomic targets with drum size, spring space, screw placement, wall thickness, internal structure, and assembly requirements. This established a viable design envelope before detailed form development began.

I produced more than ten physical iterations per tape, using real drum and spring components so each direction could be held and evaluated as a functioning object—not a hollow appearance model. Each iteration tested a relationship between hand fit, finger control, compactness, visual proportion, and internal architecture.

Instead of reacting to renderings, Engineering, Product Management, and leadership could hold each concept, operate it, and compare the experience directly. The team aligned on the ergonomic direction across the lineup with only minor refinements required.

I combined grip-contact mapping with Engineering’s competitive failure data and earlier product learnings to identify where overmold was essential for grip, impact protection, and repeated handling. This allowed the team to evaluate material placement through evidence rather than debating how much overmold simply looked or felt appropriate.
